The pleasure did not not last long. Hertz fucked us over at the main land, and it became obvious, pretty fast, that here we had to bend over again. First, the car suddenly has a max of 100km per day. I understand it if they want to prevent excess usage, but our lodge is already located 130km from the pickup/drop off place, so Hertz does not want to us to reach our snuggilly wallabie infested sleepover location, which I do not consider to be excess usage. But even with knowledge of our mainland Hertz experience, with the Hertz fuck up that cost us many hundreds additional Aussie dollars, the Kangaroo Island Hertz car lady won't budge.
But it gets worse. It is a huge 4WD, and they have many unsealed roads on Kangaroo Island, that are excellent for your average Mini Cooper / Nissan Micra / Citroen CX1 / Ford Ka. But not for our excessively large 4WD from Herz, since we did not pay for a 4WD, and although Hertz is giving us this one, we are not allowed to travel these dirt roads, excluding us from loads of greats things to visit and see. Fuck Hertz.
But it gets worse. Because Hertz mainland did not tell us in time we could bring the car to Kangaroo Island, we had to book a ferry/coach combination. We had to book the 7:30 AM ferry back to the mainland. So we already had come to terms with the fact that that meant an early rise for us, maybe get in the car at 5 AM to get to the ferry in time to travel the 130km. The Kangaroo Island Hertz lady however shook her head, and plainly told us that we were not allowed to drive the car after dark! What! Kind of important information that is completely missing in any of the Hertz brochures and websites. If we did drive after dark, we were not insured, she simply told us.
So we got a 4WD not to be used as a 4WD. We had to pay again for insurance, that was rendered useless because it wasn't valid at times we really needed it. And Hertz obviously thinks it is a ridiculous idea that we want to travel the complete distance to our lodge.
It was at that time I decided to travel as many red dirt roads as was possible with that still sprinkly white shiny dentless 4WD.
